The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion.

The S.A.L. is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion.

Together, members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of The American Legion make up what is known as
The Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.

Squadron 27 donates to Apache Junction Project HELP, which is is a community-based program supported by donations of food, money, clothing, and household goods from community groups, individuals, organizations and businesses. The program is designed to meet the needs of students whose environmental conditions may affect their general welfare.

Mission Statement

Project HELP will operate in the best interest of the students of the Apache Junction Unified School District. This will be accomplished in part by providing assistance to not only the students but, when appropriate, to their families. Such help will be provided on a case-by-case basis to qualified families and will include:
Limited emergency financial aid to secure or retain adequate shelter and utilities;
Access to new and used clothing; and
Groceries from Project HELP food bank.

SAL Sqdn 27 Supports the USAFA - CAP
Capt. Roger J Ringer CAP, was presented a check to help support the
Squadron 305 Cadet Aerospace education program.

In December 1941, one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Civil Air Patrol was founded by more than 150,000 citizens who were concerned about the defense of America’s coastline. Under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Forces, CAP pilots flew more than 500,000 hours, were credited with sinking two enemy submarines and rescued hundreds of crash survivors during World War II. On July 1, 1946, President Harry Truman established CAP as a federally chartered benevolent civilian corporation, and Congress passed Public Law 557 on May 26, 1948. CAP was charged with three primary missions – aerospace education, cadet programs and emergency services.

With the passage of Public Law 106-398 in October 2000, Congress provided that “The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer civilian auxiliary of the Air Force when the services of the Civil Air Patrol are used by any department or agency in any branch of the federal government.”

Subject: National Veteran Assistance Day

Hello Everyone,

The Holidays are among us and it is that time of year for giving, and giving to our Veterans is always a must as Sons of The American Legion, with that said now is the time to start preparing for the National Veterans Assistance Day to be held on May 15, 2010, a day in which we as Sons of The American Legion are asked to give some time to our Veterans to Show respect for the role they have had and still are in securing the freedoms we enjoy everyday.

I am asking all Detachment Commander to make this a Commanders Project in hopes we show our Veterans we Care and we are there for them as they were here for all of us, below is an Agenda to help this happen.

Agenda:
1. Promote May 15, 2010 as National Veterans Assistance Day in local
communities at city hall, county court houses, and State Capitols, schools and veterans facilities.
2. Encourage participation within your Post, Unit and Squadron with special events designed to honor these brave men and women.
3. Obtain the National Veterans Assistance Day poster from National web site and hang in Post home, nursing homes, other veteran's halls. Publicize your events in the Media, websites and newsletters.

Detachment Commanders: We have created a certificate of appreciation for you to download and present to all of your members who submit a report on their successful day helping our Veterans, and the VA&R committee.

We are a T.E.A.M (Together Everyone Achieves More)

Please email this to all of your Contacts, I do not have all the
Detachment Commanders, Adjutants, NEC, Etc. addresses and for this to work we must have everyone involved!

VAVS BINGO REPORT

DETACHMENT OF ARIZONA

September 26, 2009

Wards C & D - Mental Health Units

The event was to show appreciation to our VETS and have a rootbeer float
session. After receiving a float or bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce, they were
offered a pair of reading glasses. (Many needed the glasses just to play bingo), then
they got a choice of ball caps. At each table the veterans were provided a bowl of cookies,
candy and pretzels.

When the players got a 'bingo' on their cards, they received some canteen
books and a trip to the 'Prize Table'. All persons on unit 5C & D were welcome to join us.
Staff would pick out something for their wards and family members gave to their loved
ones. Some just gave to others in need.

We had a GREAT turnout. Some of the vets would come and go but we had
33 of the 35 patients and aproximately 15 to 20 hospital staff members come in to
observe and/or join in as they were able. The two nurse's stations received
approximately 2 dozen reading glasses each for their units. Toothbrushes, toothpaste,
shampoo and conditioner were also given to each nurse's station to be used as needed.
The vets didn't want us to stop whether we offered prizes or not. They truely
enjoyed the company of people who cared about them. Most of them, if not all, approached
one or more of us with tears in their eyes and thanked us. Our reply back of course, was
"No, we thank you for the Job you did." Then, both sides had tears. The handshakes and
sometimes the hugs began. I can't describe the feelings in my heart or the other "6" other
than a great humbling and happy feeling.

This was all made possible from the help of the Sons of The American Legion,
Detachment of Arizona, Squadron 2, Squadron 27, Squadron35, Squadron 39
and S.A.L. Special Events. And of course our crew of '7' at the event, included,

1. Chuck Jenkins - VAVS Rep. to CTH VA Medical Center
2. Jeanie Zwayer - Auxiliary 27
3. Max Wood - Commander, Squadron 27
4. Dee Wood - Auxiliary 27
5. Jerry Gramm - Past Squadron 27 Commander
6. Cindy Gramm - Auxiliary 27
7. Kelly McCue - Auxiliary 39

We all know that, FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!

For God and Country.

VAVS Rep to Carl T. Hayden VA Med Ctr.

Veterans Affairs
Voluntary Service (VAVS) program

The American Legion has been
a staunch supporter and active participant in the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) program since its inception in 1946. Today, across the country close to 6,000 American Legion volunteers contribute over 900,000 hours annually at various VA Medical Centers, Community Based Outpatient Centers, Vet Centers, Nursing Homes, State Veterans Homes, and many more locations in support
of our hospitalized veterans.

With a new generation of veterans, new locations, and technological advancements comes increased opportunities for American Legion volunteers to make a difference through the VAVS program. When Legionnaires provide the time, talent and desire, the VA provides opportunities ranging from direct patient contact to developing new marketing technology, and everything in- between. American Legion posts and members volunteer post facilities, sponsor youth volunteers, and serve veterans through partnerships with local businesses and agencies.

Make a difference- VOLUNTEER TODAY!
